Algerian Opposition Leader Calls for Morocco's Exclusion from Maghreb Union Over Israel Ties

The president of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Abderrazak Makri, claims that the "Morocco must choose between normalization with Israel and the Union of the Maghreb", aligning himself with the proposal of Rached Ghannouchi, president of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), who recently called for a three-member Maghreb Union excluding the kingdom.

"Morocco has brought the Zionists to our borders. We can no longer trust it unless it decides to renounce the path it is currently taking," said the MSP leader. He added Mauritania to the list proposed by the ARP president: "Ghannouchi spoke of Tunisia, Algeria and Libya and may have forgotten Mauritania. We, we add it to this trio."

Abderrazak Makri also expressed his attachment to the Arab Maghreb. "We are committed to the Arab Maghreb, and support any agreement signed between the four States and the others will follow as was the case for the European Union (EU)," he said.

In an interview with Radio Diwan FM, Rached Ghannouchi had called for a three-member Maghreb Union that should be composed of Libya, Algeria and Tunisia. "This should be the starting point to revive the dream of the Arab Maghreb Union, which will help solve Tunisia’s problems," he had said, stressing that the project should include the opening of borders between the three countries in order to preserve a common future for the Maghreb countries.
