Algerian Lawmakers Urge Biden to Reverse US Stance on Western Sahara, Sparking Moroccan Response

Algerian MPs have sent a letter to the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, asking him to cancel the decree recognizing American sovereignty over the Sahara. This move has elicited a reaction from their Moroccan counterparts.

"We expected the representatives of the brotherly Algerian people to invoke the long history of common struggle for independence and against the occupier, which has sown the seeds of discord" and to "show wisdom, in order to avoid the trap of aligning themselves with the supporters of the sterile separatist thesis, unjustly supported by the official circles in your brotherly country," declared the presidents of the Moroccan parliamentary groups in a joint letter addressed to their Algerian counterparts.

The Moroccan parliamentarians note that this approach "concretely confirms the extent of the interference of the brotherly state of Algeria and its representative bodies of the Algerian people in the internal affairs of a neighboring country, and in the sovereign decisions taken by states following the will of their institutions." An interference which, according to them, is in total contradiction with the official Algerian position which claims "a so-called neutrality in everything concerning the question of the territorial integrity of the kingdom, which is one of the constants of the Moroccan nation."

"The content of the correspondence unfortunately goes against international legitimacy, disregards the various relevant resolutions of the Security Council and contradicts the international positions and the legitimacy of the United Nations, which have qualified the autonomy proposed by Morocco as serious and credible, considering it as an appropriate framework to resolve this conflict," deplore the elected officials.

They also call on their Algerian counterparts to evoke the common history and heritage uniting the two peoples, to work together with the rest of the countries in the region for the foundation of a strong Maghreb Union. This could realize the interests of the peoples of the two countries and strengthen unity, solidarity and synergy, based on the opportunities for shared development among all the citizens of the Maghreb.
