Algerian dates illegally introduced into Morocco

Algerian dates of dubious quality have been smuggled into Morocco from Mali and Mauritania before the start of the month of Ramadan, with the borders between the two countries being closed.
Citizens claim that the markets of a number of Moroccan cities are flooded with Algerian dates of all kinds and shapes, in particular the "Deglet Nour" variety. A few days before the start of the month of Ramadan, these products were smuggled into Moroccan markets via Mali and Mauritania, through the El Guergarat border post, it is reported. The problem: these dates often lack the minimum standards of safety and health conditions. They would be carcinogenic.
In February, Moroccan importers said that Algerian dates do not meet health standards. They described dates that are often too dry, lacking freshness and flavor. In other words, these dates are of poor quality. As a result, many Moroccan market players are turning to other sources, such as Tunisia, Egypt, and even distant countries like Iran, as well as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, to supply themselves.
The date is an essential food for many Moroccans during the month of Ramadan.
