Algerian Coach Weighs In on Ziyech-Halilhodzic Conflict in Moroccan National Team

Abdelhak Benchikha, an Algerian technician and connoisseur of national football, reacted to the rift between Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech and the coach of the Moroccan national team, Vahid Halilhodzic. The latter excluded the Moroccan striker from the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2021).
"The Moroccan public is similar to the Algerian one: it is demanding and loves beautiful play. I followed what happened in Cameroon. In many matches, the selection lacked balance and stability, whether in terms of composition or elsewhere. It was missing something," said Abdelhak Benchikha in an interview with Al Mountakhab.
"If I were in the coach’s place, I would never have reached such a level of discord with Ziyech or anyone else. My nature does not allow me to do so," he added, highlighting the qualities of the Moroccan international. "Ziyech is an artist, talented. He deserves a chance and a place in the selection, all this in respect of the values of the jersey," concludes the Algerian.
The Franco-Bosnian technician Vahid Halilhodzic did not call up Hakim Ziyech for CAN 2021. The fans of the Atlas Lions and many sports observers regretted the absence of the Moroccan striker. Morocco was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the competition. In February, the attacking midfielder of Chelsea returned to his absence from the last gatherings of the Moroccan national team and announced that he will no longer play with the Atlas Lions.
"I will not return to the national team. This is my final decision. It’s clear enough to me, I’m focusing on my club," Hakim Ziyech said on the Abu Dhabi Sports channel.
