Algeria’s Tebboune Insists on Referendum for Western Sahara Conflict Resolution

Libya and the Sahara were at the heart of the remarks made by the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, last Saturday, in front of the high-ranking officers of the army.
The "fait accompli policy" of Morocco is "vain", President Tebboune said on this occasion, recalling that for Algeria, there is only one solution to the conflict around the last colony of Africa: "Forty-five years have already passed without a solution being found. The self-determination referendum is the only way out," he said.
The Algerian president expects the UN Secretary-General to appoint a Personal Envoy "as soon as possible" to resume negotiations as he had already requested last February, during the African Union summit in Addis Ababa. "It is regrettable to note that since the resignation of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Horst Kohler, the UN peace process has been on a rocky path," he lamented.
Horst Kohler had resigned from his position as Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara in May 2019, the same source recalls.
