Algeria Seeks Mozambique’s Support in UN Sahara Dispute with Morocco

Algeria, protector of the Polisario, is seeking the support of Mozambique to counter Morocco on the Sahara issue at the UN. These two countries sit on the Security Council as non-permanent members.
An Algeria-Mozambique alliance to undermine Morocco’s diplomatic advances on the Sahara issue at the UN? The statements of the Algerian president during the visit of his Mozambican counterpart to Algiers tend to confirm this thesis. "Regarding the Sahara issue, the last colony in Africa, we stressed the importance of finding a just and lasting solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people the legitimate right to self-determination," said Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a joint press conference with Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. He will add: "As long as we, the two countries, Algeria and Mozambique, are non-permanent members of the Security Council, we have a totally aligned vision on these issues, and in particular on the Palestinian issue and the Sahara issue."
Mozambique has recognized the "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)" since 1976. It is therefore a country that is committed to the cause of Algeria, protector of the Polisario, which is campaigning for "the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination" through a referendum, while Morocco proposes an autonomy plan under its sovereignty. A proposal supported by many countries including the United States, Spain, Germany and Israel.
