Algeria Revives Hotline to Combat Ramadan Price Gouging and Fraud

The Ministry of the Interior has announced that the 5757 number will be put back into service starting this Friday. According to the authorities, this is to allow consumers to easily report cases of fraud and illegal commercial practices or unfair competition during the holy month of Ramadan.
As is customary, the holy month of Ramadan is a time when many abuses are observed in our businesses. It is with a view to making available to the population a tool that can allow them to quickly reach the competent authorities to report and make complaints and observations that the 5757 number will be made available again, and this from today.
To this effect, a press release from the ministry reminds that thanks to this unified abbreviated number at the national level, citizens can, using both landlines and mobile phones, contact the cell responsible for receiving and following up on consumer complaints located in the prefecture or province from which the call is made. This, in order to present their complaints and observations relating to the supply of markets, prices, the quality of food products and the conditions of their preparation, storage and sale, as well as in the areas related to the organization of markets and consumer protection.
Regarding the availability and reliability of 5757, the ministry assured that "all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the proper management of this service and the reception of citizens’ calls via this number, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., throughout the holy month of Ramadan". Similarly, it will be guaranteed "appropriate handling of complaints made by citizens as soon as possible, in coordination with the services concerned", the press release emphasizes.
