Algeria Condemns Comoros' Consulate in Western Sahara, Escalating Tensions

Algeria looks unfavorably on the Comoros’ decision to open a consular representation in Laâyoune, a city in the Sahara.

"This measure, of exceptional gravity, represents a flagrant violation of the norms of international law as repeatedly recalled by the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly on the issue of Western Sahara, as well as an attack on the rules and principles that should govern inter-African relations," the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Algeria says it is surprised by this decision, which "also constitutes an unacceptable precedent of an attack on the principles governing the status of non-self-governing territories whose peoples have not yet exercised their right to self-determination in accordance with the doctrine and practice of the United Nations and the African Union, a status that cannot be called into question by a unilateral decision aimed at impeding the ongoing decolonization process."

"Algeria finally considers that the decision of the Comorian authorities is a serious attack on the principles of active solidarity that should guide relations between African countries, particularly with regard to the attachment and defense, in all circumstances, of the rules and principles contained in the Constitutive Act of the African Union," the statement concludes.
