Alcohol Consumption in Morocco: 3 Liters of Beer Per Person Annually Despite Restrictions

Nearly 310 million liters of beer, 38 million bottles of wine and 14 million bottles of alcohol were consumed by Moroccans over the past three years. With an average of 3 liters of beer per person, it is difficult to claim that the sale of alcohol is prohibited in Morocco.

With these data, it is obvious, according to the daily Assabah, that authorizations are not issued for the sole sale to non-Muslims, knowing that their number does not exceed 80,000 people.

The newspaper adds that if the law in force in Morocco were applied to the letter to Moroccans of the Muslim faith, the 80,000 non-Muslims residing in the country would all be alcoholics, with an average daily consumption of three liters of alcohol per person.

The reality is that alcohol consumption by non-Muslims is marginal compared to that of Moroccans. The authorities cannot apply this regulation which risks destabilizing the economic interests of the country.

Furthermore, the newspaper believes that Morocco has two contradictory laws regarding alcohol consumption. While one legislation prohibits its sale to Moroccans, another authorizes the collection of related taxes.

In 2019, the Government plans to recover nearly 1.5 billion dirhams in alcohol taxes, marking an increase of 60 million dirhams compared to the previous year.
