Airbnb Scams Target Moroccan Expats in Vacation Rental Nightmare

Scams on Airbnb vacation rentals are multiplying in Morocco. Among the victims, many Moroccans residing abroad (MREs).
"I rented a furnished studio in Martil, Morocco for 3 days of vacation at 1,500 DH per night. Arrived on the spot, a person handed me the keys. In the studio, there was no toilet paper, no sheets, no blankets, no towels, no dishwashing product, no dishcloth and so on..." recounts to Hespress an MRE. She filed a complaint, in vain. "I filed a complaint with Airbnb, they want proof of the absence of these items... the height, right??? so they absolve themselves, don’t want to know anything. On the other hand, for billing, their service works perfectly," explains the vacationer.
Like her, there are many of these MREs who are victims of poor service that the Airbnb site is supposed to protect them from. To attract vacationers, some scammers post ads with staggering discounts. Then they ask customers to transfer the money through external, often unsecured platforms.
