Agadir-Tiznit Gridlock: Morocco’s Vital Road Link Crumbles Under Pressure, Sparking 6 Billion Dirham Highway Plan

Users of National Road No. 1, a strategic axis between Agadir and Tiznit, are experiencing a nightmare due to unprecedented congestion. It is necessary to build a highway.
Narrow sections, multiple roundabouts, heavy traffic... The RN1, a vital artery connecting Agadir to Tiznit, has been saturated in recent days, particularly marked at the level of the province of Chtouka-Ait Baha, seriously disrupting traffic flow in both directions, reports Al Akhbar. While the distance between Agadir and Tiznit does not exceed 85 kilometers, the travel time for motorists is lengthening due to incessant slowdowns.
Traffic jams and delays, especially on the Chtouka-Ait Baha section, are multiplying simply because this road, the only road link between the north and south of Morocco, crosses many douars and municipalities. The presence of multiple roundabouts, combined with the narrowness of the roadway, makes traffic difficult. This presence is the source of chronic slowdowns, but also of frequent accidents. Another major difficulty: any breakdown or collision immediately blocks the axis. Enough to plunge users and travelers into endless waits.
It is therefore necessary to build a highway between Agadir and Tiznit. The geotechnical studies, the first stage of the project, have already begun. They will last four months. 85 kilometers long, this new axis will connect the northern entrance of Agadir, passing through the Al Massira airport, the city of Biougra, to end at the Grand Passage intersection, the starting point of the highway to Dakhla. The project budget is estimated at 6 billion dirhams.
