Agadir Faces PCR Test Shortage Amid Covid-19 Surge

Faced with the many cases of Covid-19 contamination and deaths recorded in the Souss-Massa region, the city of Agadir has only two private medical analysis laboratories for performing PCR tests. Result: they are stormed by impatient citizens.

The city of Agadir is experiencing a surge in positive Covid-19 cases. The two accredited private analysis laboratories of the Ministry of Health for performing PCR tests are unable to keep up with the demand.

The residents barely hide their discontent. "It’s not normal that a city as large as Agadir has only two laboratories for PCR tests. It’s a city that is in motion almost all year round and sees a large influx of foreign and local tourists," says S. K, a state engineer on a mission in Agadir, quoted by Hespress. He thought he would take the opportunity to have his test done after showing symptoms.

For him, it remains a test of strength. "I couldn’t even get on the waiting list because there were so many people at the entrance. Physical distancing was almost non-existent at the entrance to the laboratory and I imagine it was the same inside. As for wearing masks, it’s up to each individual. I was very angry to witness this scene, which to me was unacceptable in these times of pandemic."

Complaints are pouring in on social media to denounce, through posts, videos and photos, the disorder in these two laboratories. One can clearly see an endless line of people and total absence of barrier measures. "How can a city as large as Agadir, which is experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, have only two analysis laboratories for PCR tests? It’s unacceptable." In the last 24 hours, the region has also recorded 4 new deaths (1 in Agadir-Ida-Ou-tanane, 1 in Taroudant, 1 in Tiznit, 1 in Tata).
