Agadir Earthquake 60th Anniversary: Interfaith Prayers Honor Victims and City’s Rebirth

The celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the Agadir earthquake was an opportunity for Jews, Christians and Muslims to pay a well-deserved tribute to the victims.
This commemoration, which will take place throughout this month of March, began last Friday with prayers for the victims in Arabic, French and Hebrew, from several cities in Morocco and abroad.
This is an initiative taken head-on by the City Council, in partnership with the Regional Council and associations active in the fields of culture and heritage. Several scheduled activities will attempt to recall the memory and rebirth of this city.
The Head of Government, Saâd-Eddine El Othmani, present at this commemoration, stated that King Mohammed VI had rehabilitated Agadir by transforming it into the locomotive of development, recalling that he was four years old when the earthquake had struck this city. For his part, the Wali of Agadir, Ahmed Hajji, stressed that the capital of Souss had entered a new era after the royal speech on the 44th anniversary of the Green March.
To recall, 16,000 victims were recorded during the tragedy, including 1,500 Christians and dozens of Jews living in Agadir at the time.
