Agadir Court Orders City to Pay Policeman 50,000 Dirhams After Stray Dog Attack

The administrative court of Agadir has ordered the Agadir City Council to pay 50,000 dirhams in damages to a policeman who was the victim of an attack by stray dogs while on duty.

It all started with a complaint from a police officer. While on patrol as part of his work on his motorcycle, he was attacked by stray dogs in one of the streets of the city of Agadir, reports the Arabic daily Al Akhbar. He loses his balance and falls. He gets away with a broken arm. He had to be admitted to the hospital, where the necessary care was provided.

The Agadir administrative court ruled on the case. The plaintiff is claiming 80,000 dirhams in compensation for the damages. Meanwhile, the defense of the City Council mentions the incompetence of the court to rule on the case, but it will be dismissed. It also demanded a medical examination. In vain. The results confirm the facts. Referring to a Court of Cassation ruling in a similar case, the court has however reduced the amount of compensation to 50,000 DH.

Following this legal case, the Agadir City Council is working to put an end to the recurring attacks by stray dogs. A recent amendment to a municipal decree related to this issue, increasing the budget allocated to the fight against the stray dog problem from 10 million to 26 million dirhams, has been voted. A large-scale operation to fight stray dogs and cats and the construction of a public regional shelter will therefore be financed. Similarly, no less than 4,000 animals will be sterilized.
