12 Years of Imprisonment for Faysel Amzaourou After the Murder of His Neighbor

The Hainaut Assize Court sentenced Faysel Amzaourou to 12 years of imprisonment on Wednesday for the murder of Abdealli Hadjem in 2022. The jury upheld the intent to commit homicide despite the defense’s request for a reclassification.

The events took place on July 3, 2022, on Avenue de l’Europe. After a violent altercation that started in their shared building, the 45-year-old Moroccan defendant had inflicted a fatal knife wound to the thorax of his Algerian neighbor. The victim died on the spot, while the assailant had fled for ten days before turning himself in.

The jury rejected the defense’s argument for a reclassification to involuntary manslaughter. The jurors deemed the intent to kill established by the violence of the gesture, the depth of the 12-centimeter wound, and the location of the blow, delivered directly under the heart.

The public prosecutor had initially requested a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. However, the court recognized several mitigating circumstances in favor of the convicted, including his sincere remorse, a beginning of self-reflection, and intellectual capacities deemed below average, reducing the final sentence to 12 years of imprisonment.
