11-Year-Old Belgian Boy Dies Days After Bicycle Collision with Car

Bilal Ben Omar, an 11-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin, died a few days after being hit by a car while cycling in Maasmechelen, Belgium.
The young boy, who will be buried in Belgium, was cycling home from school when he was hit by a car at a roundabout last Wednesday. His bicycle and schoolbag were thrown several meters away. Seriously injured, he was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Bilal, the child of a Moroccan family of three children, is the second student from his school, the Go Basisschool in Maasmechelen, to die this year. His teacher, very touched, was called by the parents on Monday to say goodbye to him.
At the school, where another student had already died at the beginning of the school year, it was decided to close the doors on Tuesday. The teaching staff also gathered to reflect on what can be done to help Bilal’s classmates. The father of the young boy is in constant contact with the school, where Bilal’s two young sisters are also enrolled.
