World Cup Fallout: Riots Erupt in Brussels After Morocco Defeats Belgium

As if foretold, clashes broke out between police and supporters who caused disturbances to public order after the 2nd round World Cup match between Belgium and Morocco, which ended in a victory for the Atlas Lions.
"Around 3:22 pm, dozens of people, some of whom were hooded, sought confrontation with the police, which compromised public safety," Ilse Van de Keere, spokeswoman for the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone, told the Belga news agency.
Sabotage of traffic lights, projectiles thrown, fires lit on public roads in certain neighborhoods of the Belgian capital... Clashes broke out after the Morocco-Belgium match. "There was use of pyrotechnic equipment, projectile throwing, use of sticks, public road fires, including a container at the intersection of Boulevard Lemonnier and Rue de Woeringen," the Belgian police said.
Equipped with water cannons and tear gas, about a hundred police officers had to intervene against unidentified supporters. They destroyed street furniture and threw projectiles at the police. Realizing the situation, the Belgian police closed several neighborhoods of the city and also made arrests.
