World Bantamweight Champion Oubaali Faces Donaire in Los Angeles Title Defense

The Franco-Moroccan boxer Nordine Oubaali is making his return to the ring after contracting Covid-19. The world bantamweight champion will face veteran Filipino Nonito Donaire in a fight on Saturday, May 29 in Los Angeles to defend his title.

At 34 years old, the Franco-Moroccan is the holder of the WBC (World Boxing Council) title. However, he will have to overcome a tough boxer who has three world titles in the same category (2011, 2018 and 2019) to his credit.

Originally from Houara in southern Morocco, Oubaali grew up in Lens. It was in 2014 that he had his first professional fight in Marrakech before participating in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. In the ring, the boxer represents France, but fights with shorts in the colors of Morocco.

Nicknamed "Nino One", he remains undefeated in 17 professional fights, 12 of which were won by KO. Oubaali is trained by his older brother Ali. Together, they managed to win the WBC world title on January 19, 2019, at the temple of the noble art at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

However, his Filipino opponent is of a different caliber. Nonito has 40 wins (including 26 KOs) and 6 losses. He is also in pursuit of a 19th world title. Since the beginning of his career, Nonito has indeed won and defended his belts in four different categories.

According to a statement from his entourage reported by the MAP, in Washington "the May 29 fight in Los Angeles is of great importance for Nordine Oubaali", a victory will allow him to confirm his status among the elite of the bantamweights, and to be able to unify the belts of the category against the Japanese Naoya Inoue, world number one, holder of the IBF / WBA belts.
