Volotea banned fuel surcharge Morocco flights

Volotea will no longer be able to adjust ticket prices after purchase. The Spanish low-cost carrier, used by many travelers on routes to Morocco, had implemented a system allowing it to charge a surcharge after booking, depending on fuel price fluctuations.

The method surprised some passengers. After paying for their ticket, they could receive a surcharge request a few days before departure. The airline presented this mechanism as a "fair travel commitment," with a possible increase in case of oil price spikes, but also a supposed refund in case of price drops.

The DGCCRF (France) has ruled: this commercial practice is prohibited. The Fraud Prevention Authority reminds that in Europe, the ticket price must be clear and final at the time of purchase. An airline therefore cannot unilaterally modify an already paid fare, except in very specific circumstances.

Up to 14 euros per passenger

The surcharge could reach 14 euros per passenger per flight if the barrel of oil exceeded a certain threshold. Volotea claimed that the vast majority of affected customers had accepted this mechanism, with the possibility to cancel or modify their flight free of charge.

But French authorities asked the airline to end it immediately, under penalty of a daily fine of 3,000 euros for each day of delay. Volotea finally complied and had already announced the abandonment of the system for new bookings from June 10, 2026.
