Viral Rumor of Moroccan ’Billionaire’ Exposes Tax Amnesty Tensions

A rumor has been swelling in recent days on Moroccan social networks: a man, Brahim Ouâli, would have deposited 14 million dirhams in a bank in Agadir, as part of the ongoing tax regularization.
This story, which was first perceived as a joke, quickly gained momentum, generating numerous comments and questions, reports Achkayen. The tax regularization, set up to encourage citizens to regularize their financial situation, has opened the door to many speculations and the spread of sometimes extravagant figures.
In reality, Brahim Ouâli is far from being the billionaire that some have described. Originally from Tiznit, this modest man is known in the region for old videos posted on YouTube several years ago. In these videos, shot for humorous purposes, he staged himself in burlesque situations, claiming to have found a treasure or living a nabob’s life.
The enthusiasm around the tax regularization has resurrected these images from the past, contributing to the creation of a legend around his alleged fortune. Some content creators have taken advantage of the opportunity to share these videos, thus amplifying the rumor.
But between reality and fiction, there is only a small step. Several people from Tangier, Casablanca and Agadir would have taken advantage of the ongoing tax regularization in Morocco, but whose limit is set for tonight, to sometimes declare several tens of millions of dirhams.
