University of Montpellier Ordered to Enroll Moroccan Student After Discrimination Lawsuit

A Moroccan student was not accepted into a Master’s program at the University of Montpellier. The administrative court of the city has ordered the institution to enroll the Moroccan and compensate her with 500 euros.

The University of Montpellier refused to enroll the Moroccan who finished 3rd in the final exams. "She was offered to re-enroll in the same undergraduate program as last year," says France 3 Montpellier. The young student took the case to the administrative court, which ordered the university to enroll her and compensate her.

Other students not accepted into Master’s programs by the law and science faculties also brought the same case before the court. "The Montpellier University Combat Union is proud to announce that the 6 students who sued the University of Montpellier have fully won their case," said the Montpellier student union SCUM, which has constantly denounced this practice.

And to add: "Following the hearing that took place on Wednesday, October 26, the 6 students must be enrolled within 7 days, and the university must pay them 500 euros each under Article L761-1 of the Administrative Justice Code." The university was convicted of "illegal selection in Master’s programs".

For the union, this new victory against the University of Montpellier "adds to the one obtained at the other university in the city, the University Paul Valéry, where SCUM has had 83% of the students refused in Master’s programs enrolled following a strong mobilization." In total, the union’s action has led to the enrollment of "31 people at Paul-Valéry and 6 at the University of Montpellier".
