Tribute Match for Young Belgian Footballer Ends in Chaos After Player Death

The match organized on Monday in tribute to Ibrahim Barmou, the 19-year-old footballer who suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday during a match on the pitch of the Stéphanois club based in Court-Saint-Étienne (Belgium), completely derailed.
The death of Ibrahim caused great emotion within his mini-football team, the M. Wac Ottignies 2, a national and P5 brabant club, and in the Belgian football world. To pay tribute to him, a match was organized between the club’s B team and the Drink Team Nil 2 team. At the start of the match, a minute of silence was observed by the locals, in the presence of Ibrahim’s many friends who came to attend this tribute match.
The match became somewhat tense after the exclusion of two players from Ibrahim’s club and another from the opposing club. After clashes between the players, the match was suspended. The Drink Team Nil player who was excluded, alone in his locker room, was then assaulted by the excluded player from the opposing team, accompanied by another. He fled to take refuge in a bar, but was assaulted again by the same player.
The referee, who was on site at the time of the events, detailed the course of the incidents in his match report. The aggressor player could therefore face sports sanctions. The victim suffers from a fractured jaw and was urgently operated on this Thursday. He will be unavailable for 3 to 4 months and will not be able to play the next matches. He will also have to present a sick leave of several weeks to his work.
The police were alerted by the supporters of the local club, but on their arrival, the Ottintois had all left the hall. On Tuesday, the managers of the Drink Team Nil provided the agents with CCTV images of the bar showing part of the fight. The injured player filed a complaint with the police.
