Trial for Belgian ISIS Fighter Postponed, Death Unconfirmed

After a first introductory hearing held this Friday, the examination of the case of Lotfi Aoumeur, who had made threats against Belgium and France in February 2015, was postponed to April 23 by the Liège criminal court. The terrorist is supposed dead but his death has never been confirmed.
Lotfi Aoumeur was recognized as one of the four attackers responsible for the suicide attack on August 9, 2016 near Mosul, Iraq, where they had detonated their explosive belts after mingling with Iraqi soldiers in Qayyara, about 50 kilometers south of Mosul. 26 years old at the time of the attack, Lotfi Aoumeur had the combat name Abu Anwar al-Belgiki. He was also identified in a video in which he claimed responsibility for the March 22, 2016 attacks in Brussels, reports 7sur7.
The public prosecutor’s office had been informed of his death but the death has not been officially confirmed. Thus, the Verviers resident must be tried for his acts of participation in the activities of a terrorist group. His brother is also mentioned in this case, even though his participation in the group’s actions is minimal and controversial. "He denies any involvement in the activities in which Lotfi participated. A first case against him had already been dismissed. Here, his indictment is based solely on Lofti Aoumeur’s campaign statements," said lawyer Stéphane Collin.
