Tracked Belgian Stork Completes 2,000-km Journey to Morocco, Breaking Migration Records

Elisabeth, one of the storks banded in June in the Zwin Nature Park in Belgium, was spotted on August 25th in Morocco. This is the first bird to cross the Strait of Gibraltar since the start of the tracking project in 2019.
The stork covered more than 2000 kilometers in a very short time, after taking off on August 6th, two weeks earlier than usual, announced the park management, specifying that the banding of storks is part of a scientific research project that the nature park is conducting in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences on protected species.
The Zwin has traced the bird’s route, noting that after a short stop in northwestern France, it continued its migration through the west of the country and central Spain, reaching the far south on August 24th and crossing into Morocco on August 25th.
"The Strait of Gibraltar is about 15 kilometers at its narrowest point. It took Elisabeth less than 20 minutes to cross it. This seems long, but in this area, there is often a strong wind that makes the crossing difficult and risky for migratory birds," the park explained.
