Suspended Belgian Teacher Reinstated After Controversy Over Muhammad Cartoon in Class

The citizenship education professor suspended for showing a caricature of the naked prophet Mohammad to 10-year-old students was reinstated last Thursday, announced the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean college. However, he will receive support from the educational cell of the municipality and the mobile teams of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
In his defense, his lawyer, Jean Bourtembourg, stated that the professor invited his colleagues to an objective debate if they could confuse him. In the absence of debates, he believes that there is no fault and claims what he did (...) "It is an act of civic duty for a citizenship professor to address with his students, after the assassination of a colleague, the themes of blasphemy, caricature, revenge and freedom of expression. It is a real duty... There would have been a mother of a student who complained and this complaint is not even in the file."
For her part, Catherine Moureaux protested against the teacher’s pedagogy with 10-year-old children. She believes that showing primary school students obscene images was not appropriate. According to her, the school has educational materials, a specific suitcase created after the attacks that allows addressing the issue of freedom of expression and violent radicalism.
Two months ago, this citizenship education professor had shown 10-year-old children in a 5th grade class at school 11 a Charlie Hebdo caricature entitled "A Star is Born." It shows the prophet Mohammad naked on all fours. Thanks to the legal support of his lawyer, an appeal had been filed before the Council of State, allowing him to prevail today.
