Suspect in Bar Manager's Murder Remains Jailed After Legal Delay

In pre-trial detention since 2016, Marc S., suspected of having murdered a bar manager, thought he could be released last Tuesday. But the hearing did not take place within the time limits indicated by law, as his request was filed during the lawyers’ strike.

The decision to keep Marc S., 49 years old, in detention was made late in the evening of Tuesday, at the Paris judicial court. He is incarcerated in the Fresnes prison (Val-de-Marne), for the murder of Ezzedine, a bar manager in Corbeil-Essonnes. His request for release had been filed by his lawyers on January 30, in the midst of the magistrates’ strike movement. However, according to the law, these hearings must be held within 20 days of this request. Failing that, release is automatic. But Marc S. was summoned 34 days after the filing of his request, so two weeks too late.

But what really happened for Marc S. to end up in prison for murder? According to Le Parisien, it all started on September 13, 2016, when Ezzedine, 40 years old, owner of the bar-tobacco shop, located in front of the Town Hall, had been shot dead in his business, with four shots fired at close range. The alleged shooter, Marc S., a friend of the victim, had been arrested on October 9. Placed in custody, he admitted to having fired. A love quarrel around Ezzedine’s wife could be at the origin of the drama.

Marc S., before this arrest in 2016, had had run-ins with the law. Involved in another case, he had fled abroad. Knowing this past, Ezzedine’s relatives feared that the suspect’s release would allow him to escape justice again.
