Survey Reveals 40% of French Muslims Face Racial Discrimination, Government Official Responds

Saturday 9 November 2019, by Sylvanus

On the sidelines of a restitution seminar, Marlène Schiappa, Secretary of State for Gender Equality and the Fight against Discrimination, reacted to a survey conducted by IFOP, at the request of DILCRAH, the Government Agency for the Fight against Racism and Discrimination, and the Jean Jaurès Foundation.

40% of Muslims have been victims of racist behavior over the past five years, the survey reveals.

According to Marlène Schiappa, Secretary of State for Gender Equality and the Fight against Discrimination, the study showed that discrimination affects French citizens whose families have been in France for several generations.

Similarly, the level of discrimination in access to housing is extremely high, regardless of the situation of the people, she said. Marlène Schiappa also noted a paradox: "The more educated you are, the more you are discriminated against."

All of which leads her to state that "this is a failure of our integration model, it is also what fuels communitarianism." And, according to her, this is what explains the fact that people who feel excluded from the Republic are attracted to those who organize themselves on the margins of the Republic.

To reverse the trend, the Secretary of State suggests making people aware of their rights. In this sense, Marlène Schiappa announced that an Anti-Discrimination Brigade (BADI) has been launched.

According to her, it allows people to report facts, so that the authorities can carry out checks in the places and companies where problems are identified.

The study in question was conducted on a sample of 1,007 people, representative of the Muslim religious population, aged 15 and over (quota method), from August 26 to September 18.
