Study Reveals Widespread Hiring Discrimination Against Maghrebian Job Seekers in France

Friday 10 January 2020, by Bladi.net

Maghrebian candidates seeking jobs are more affected by hiring discrimination in large French companies. These candidates receive less than 20% of responses compared to French candidates after sending a CV, according to researchers.

According to the results of the testing campaign, revealed on Wednesday by France inter, in addition to severe hiring discrimination in large French companies, a lower discrimination is noted according to the place of residence. It is even more pronounced in large companies, particularly those whose turnover is above the median, and is concentrated in a few sectors of activity, the researchers continue.

Contrary to the promises of President Emmanuel Macron in 2018, the names of these companies are not yet made public in order to be able to "prosecute them in court", deplores the National Federation of Maisons des potes.

This campaign was conducted between October 2018 and January 2019, with 103 large companies among the 250 largest capitalizations on the Paris stock exchange. It was also carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Paris-Est-Créteil, at the request of the government.

These researchers conducted more than 8,500 tests by combining applications and information requests, in response to job offers or spontaneously. For each test, two identical fictional profiles are sent, one with a first and last name of Maghrebian origin (such as Hicham Kaidi or Jamila Benchargui), the other with a French surname (such as Julien Legrand or Emilie Petit), specifies the same source.
