Stranded Moroccan Traders Sleep in Vans as France-Morocco Ferry Routes Close

Many Moroccan traders find themselves stranded in Sète following the closure of maritime lines between France and Morocco. Faced with the difficulty of reaching their consulate, they sleep in their vans.

In a letter, Jeanine Léger, president of the Cimade de Sète, alerted the prefect of Hérault, Jacques Witkowski, to the situation of "about twenty Moroccan nationals [...] stranded in Sète for about ten days, unable to return home following the latest government decisions that led to the cancellation of maritime links between the two countries." "These people are finding themselves over the days in material and sanitary conditions of concern given the context we are experiencing, not to mention their administrative situation on the territory," she added.

Ms. Léger said that the local associations are trying to help them with "their small means". She hopes that after her alert, "solutions can be found to support these travelers in forced transit," reports Midi Libre.

On Thursday, volunteers alerted the local Cimade representative following a patrol. After intervention, she said, it was possible for some of them "to use the Seamen’s Club facilities." The situation was also reported to the Port Captaincy, she hinted. "They tried to reach their Consulate in vain. Despite the insurance they took out when buying their tickets, it seems that no assistance can be offered to them by the travel agency," Ms. Léger specified.
