US Stance on Western Sahara Unlikely to Change Under Biden, Expert Says

The French political scientist, specialist in the Arab world and Islam in the West, Gilles Kepel, rules out any change in the American position on the Sahara issue. The predecessor of Joe Biden had signed, on December 10, 2020, a decree recognizing American sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara.
"Morocco is an important ally of the United States of America [...] we have seen this with the recognition by the US Administration of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara," he said in an interview with the Atlantic Radio station. Gilles Kepel assures that this American position will not change under the Biden administration. If this were the case, "it would be unraveling things that have been done," he said.
Speaking about the restoration of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, the French political scientist believes that this is of paramount importance for the kingdom, which will be able to position itself in the post-oil era. "Morocco is a country that is ideally located as a candidate for all the issues of green hydrogen with several assets: sea, wind and proximity to the European market," he said, adding that this is a fundamental issue, and Israeli technology is at the forefront. "This is not a negligible element," added Gilles Kepel.
