Spanish Prosecutor Clears Moroccan Fish Farms Near Chafarinas Islands

The Spanish public prosecutor does not consider the installation by Morocco of fish farms near the Chafarinas Islands as a crime, and has therefore decided to close the investigation opened following the complaint filed by the deputy of the Popular Party (PP), Fernando Gutiérrez Díaz de Otazu.
At the end of the investigation, the public prosecutor came to the conclusion that "the fish farms installed are outside the special conservation area (ZEC)" and that "there is no indication of the commission of a criminal offense". It has not been established that this protected area has been damaged, destroyed or exposed to risks of destruction. For these reasons, the public prosecutor has decided to close the investigation. The decision has been communicated to the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, reports El Confidencial Digital.
The complaint of the PP deputy from Melilla, Fernando Gutiérrez Díaz de Otazu, came in May, four days after the meeting in Rotterdam (Netherlands) between the party president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the head of the Moroccan government, Aziz Akhannouch. During this meeting, the PP leader expressed his willingness to "rebuild a foreign policy based on trust" and accepted the Moroccan official’s invitation to visit Rabat before the end of the year.
