Spanish Political Party Urges Citizenship for Moorish Descendants, Calls for Historical Education Reform

The Party for the Renaissance and European Union (PRUNE) has asked the government and the European Parliament to recognize Spanish nationality for the descendants of the Moors.
Through its representative, Driss Mohammed, the political party is calling for the modification of laws and study programs in educational institutions. The proposal aims to allow the younger generation to know the "true history of Andalusia, as well as the different cultures that have coexisted peacefully for many years in this territory," he said.
In Spain, the acceptance of cultural differences is a recurring problem that disrupts living together. And it is this equation that PRUNE intends to solve by initiating this bill. "We are exchanging with the different political groups so that this initiative materializes," added the political leader.
The Secretary General of the party, Ismail Cuéllar, for his part, deplores the unjustified discrimination carried out by the authorities in granting nationality to the descendants of the Sephardim and refusing it to those of the Moriscos, while the two have lived on the same territory and were expelled for the same reason. He also assures that PRUNE is neither an Islamic party nor a Muslim party. "In our party, in addition to Muslims, there are Christians and atheists," he clarifies.
It is still too early to assess the influence of the party, Ismail Cuéllar also points out, stressing that the wave of change will blow when "we have a new generation of immigrants, more educated and more attentive to their political leaders, as is the case with the Union of Muslim Democrats in France".
