Spanish Officials Unable to Determine Extent of Pegasus Spyware Breach on Government Phones

The Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, indicated that, according to the technical reports of the National Cryptology Center (CCN) under the National Intelligence Center (CNI), it is "impossible" to know what data was extracted from the mobile phones of President Pedro Sanchez and the ministers, hacked using Pegasus between May and June 2021.
In an interview with Europa Press, Robles claims to have "no idea" about the 9 megabytes of data extracted from her phone that was hacked using Pegasus. According to the Spanish government, 2.6 gigabytes and 130 megabytes of data were extracted from Sanchez’s phone and more than 6 gigabytes of data from that of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
The Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, declined any responsibility in this matter, stating that his department does not establish security protocols for the mobile phones of government members. Robles, for her part, had specified that the security of the mobile phones of government members is "transversal" and that several agencies are responsible for overseeing it.
"I think that right now, the important thing is to know who hacked the phones. We must not deviate from the problem," Robles stressed, hoping that justice will be able to resolve this case.
It should be noted that suspicions have been directed from the outset towards Morocco. The dates of the phone hacks coincide with the migration crisis during which several thousand Moroccans, mainly minors, forced the border post to enter Ceuta illegally.
