Spanish Firm Abengoa to Sell Majority Stake in Major Moroccan Desalination Plant

The Spanish company Abengoa, based in Seville, has decided to sell 51% of the shares it holds in the concession company that operates the desalination plant in Agadir, Morocco.

The divestment process has attracted the interest of major industrial groups and international investment funds, including the Spanish Acciona, already present in Morocco, and the French Engie. Abengoa, in insolvency proceedings since February 2020, is in the process of divesting its assets after the failure of the rescue plan aimed at injecting 249 million euros from the SEPI.

With a production capacity of 275,000 m³/day (150,000 m³/day of drinking water and 125,000 m³/day of irrigation water), with the possibility of expansion to 400,000 m³/day, the Agadir desalination plant is an important project that also includes the construction of an irrigation network for an area of 15,000 ha.
