Spain Navigates Gas Supply to Morocco Amid Algerian Tensions

Faced with Algeria’s many threats, Spain has found ways to ensure the delivery of gas that Morocco will buy on international markets via the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME) in the reverse direction, without falling out with its partner.
Algeria has repeatedly threatened to break its gas supply contracts with Spanish companies if a single drop of its gas is resold to Morocco under the new agreement with Spain to transport gas to the kingdom via the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME). Faced with this threat, the Iberian peninsula is doing its utmost not to upset its partner, with whom relations are no longer rosy since the change in its position on the Sahara.
According to sources within the Spanish gas network operator, "the Spanish government has asked Enagas to set up a system of guarantees of origin in order to ensure that the LNG purchased by Morocco can be injected into the Spanish gas network and then exported to Morocco via the GME," reports the specialized website El Periodico de la Energia. This will provide transparency and ensure the origin and destination of the LNG that Morocco imports on international markets.
Already, "Enagas officials are working on the new procedure," it is reported.
