Spain and Morocco Agree on New Protections for Seasonal Farm Workers

Moroccan seasonal workers are preparing to join the peninsula for the next strawberry campaign, following a meeting between the Spanish and Moroccan governments in Tangier.
The final details regarding the arrival of the seasonal workers were discussed in collaboration with the agricultural organizations of the province of Huelva. Asaja confirmed that this meeting, held on November 27, aimed not only to organize the upcoming campaign but also to evaluate the previous 2022/2023 season.
An important point addressed during this meeting concerns the new Gecco law. This introduces several significant changes, including a four-year work permit for seasonal workers. This measure commits agricultural companies to employ these workers for a period of four years, with a work stay in Spain of nine months per year. This provision implies a return to their country of origin for the remaining three months of each year.
At the same time, Morocco announced the creation of a "call center" to facilitate the summoning of seasonal workers and also addressed the arrangements to organize the return trips, whether to Tangier city or Tangier Med.
A novelty this year is the introduction of the new TIE card, which will allow seasonal workers to move freely between Spain and Morocco during the validity of their contracts. Furthermore, unlike previous years, the workers will not be called in phases but rather according to the labor needs of the companies.
