Soundos El Ahmadi, the Moroccan-origin comedian who woke up Belgium
A television sequence on the Flemish public channel VRT sparked a social storm. After a presenter minimized street harassment against the comedian Soundos El Ahmadi, more than 20,000 women shared their testimonies to prove the reality of this insecurity.
The incident occurred on the set of the show "De Afspraak," when the Dutch comedian of Moroccan origin, Soundos El Ahmadi, was interrupted as she detailed the extent of insecurity in public spaces. Presenter Bart Schols tried to nuance her remarks by citing the example of his own friends who would not feel in danger. This remark provoked an immediate response from the guest: "Your friends are not the statistics," she retorted, denouncing the "wrong kind of cheek" that consists of ignoring the statistical facts to reassure the male conscience.
This confrontation acted as a powerful detonator within Belgian society. In response to the skepticism displayed on screen, a platform called "What are they talking about?" was launched by a citizen to compile the experiences of women. The initiative met with a massive response: in just a few days, the bar of 20,000 stories was crossed. These contributions, ranging from verbal intimidation to physical aggression, aim to oppose the reality on the ground to the doubts expressed live.
The controversy escalated when the host tried to defend himself with irony, lamenting that as a "white man," his participation in the debates was now being challenged, a stance deemed inappropriate by several editorialists. At the same time, sexologist Goedele Liekens denounced the persistence of reverse blame, revealing that she had received messages from men justifying harassment by the victims’ clothing.
