Sofyan Amrabat will no longer play for Morocco as long as Mohamed Ouahbi is coach

Sofyan Amrabat is temporarily withdrawing from the Moroccan national team. The international midfielder has announced that he will refuse any call-up as long as Mohamed Ouahbi remains in charge of the Atlas Lions, while ruling out international retirement.

The player announced his decision this Tuesday, September 8, in a long message published on his Instagram account. “I do not feel capable of continuing to represent the national team under the current coach,” he explains.

Sofyan Amrabat will therefore make himself unavailable for upcoming call-ups “as long as he remains in office.” He does not mention Mohamed Ouahbi other than through his position, but the condition he has set leaves no ambiguity about the scope of his decision.

The Moroccan, however, refuses to reveal what led him to this break. “Out of respect for the national team and everyone concerned, I prefer to keep the reasons for this decision private,” he writes.

Amrabat refuses to retire from international football

The player above all emphasizes the temporary nature of his withdrawal. “I want to be clear: I am not retiring from international football and I am not closing the door on the possibility of representing Morocco again,” he specifies.

This decision comes after several weeks of questions surrounding his relationship with Mohamed Ouahbi. After the World Cup, the player’s brother had publicly criticized his playing time. The coach then attempted to put an end to the controversy, notably assuring that Sofyan Amrabat had no problem with him.

Amrabat recalls having worn the Moroccan jersey for twelve years and describes the national team as “the greatest honor” of his career. He also promises to continue supporting his teammates despite his absence.

The situation is now clear: as long as Mohamed Ouahbi remains coach, Sofyan Amrabat will not make himself available to Morocco. A change on the bench could, however, pave the way for his return to the Atlas Lions.
