Snowfall Exposes Challenges at Vital Moroccan Mountain Tunnel

The recent snowfall that hit the Draa-Tafilalet region has highlighted the difficulties of access to certain areas, reviving the debate on the state of road infrastructure, particularly the "Ghar Zaabal" tunnel.
Dug during the French protectorate, between 1927 and 1928, the "Zaabal" tunnel remains an essential passage to connect the north and southeast of Morocco. This tunnel, a true legacy of the country’s road history, allows crossing the High Atlas and still constitutes a strategic axis for the transport of goods and people today.
But faced with the increase in traffic and climatic hazards, such as the recent snowfall, its dilapidation and narrowness raise concerns. Voices are rising among the population to demand the modernization of this structure. Rehabilitation, widening, or even construction of a new infrastructure: the proposals are numerous to open up the region and allow it to open up more to the rest of the country.
