She defends an insulted young Bangladeshi man: this Moroccan woman then becomes the target of racists

A 28-year-old cultural mediator of Moroccan origin, born in Caltanissetta, Sicily, says she became the target of racist insults after intervening to defend a young Bangladeshi man who was being harassed near the train station.

The incident allegedly occurred three days before her testimony, published on Tuesday, September 8, by Seguo News. As she was walking home, the young woman says she noticed two men sitting on a bench who were hurling insults at a passerby from Bangladesh.

She decided to intervene and reproached them for targeting him solely because he was a foreigner. She then revealed to them that she herself was of Moroccan origin. According to her account, one of the two men immediately approached her menacingly and in turn directed racist and vulgar insults at her.

“No one intervened”

Even more than the insults, the young woman says she was struck by the attitude of the witnesses. She maintains that no one intervened, either when the young Bangladeshi man was being harassed or when she herself became the target of the two men.

Born and raised in Caltanissetta, where she works as a cultural mediator for a social cooperative, she says she wanted to make the incident public for fear of seeing this kind of behavior become normalized.

Her employer has since responded. Fabio Ruvolo, president of the Etnos social cooperative, condemned the incident while refusing to extend it to the entire population of Caltanissetta. He believes that racist behavior remains a minority phenomenon and highlights the integration of many foreigners into businesses, associations and local life.
