Sardine Prices Plunge in Morocco as Catch Surges, Benefiting Consumers

The abundance of sardine supply in Safi has caused sardine prices to plummet. Moroccan consumers have reason to be satisfied.
At the port level, the price of a basket (24 kg) does not exceed 50 dirhams, or 2 dirhams per kilo of sardines, reports Al Akhbar. The significant drop in prices in Safi is explained by the large quantity of 700 tons of sardines and other related varieties such as herring, unloaded on the market on Saturday, March 14, by several fishing boats.
Domestic consumption is around 80% of this exceptional catch. The rest has been transported to about twenty industrial canneries.
The port of Safi is ranked 13th worldwide in global fish production, according to a recent report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In 2019, nearly 42,000 tons were recorded for an estimated value of more than 290 million dirhams. Sardine, like other varieties, contributes to the development of local canneries.
