Russia Criticizes Spain’s Shift on Western Sahara, Backs UN Resolutions

The Russian ambassador to Algeria, Igor Belyaev, deplored the abrupt change in Spain’s position on the Sahara, recalling that it has a "historical responsibility" towards the Sahrawi people, that of completing the decolonization process.
In an interview with the Algerian channel An-Nahar, the Russian diplomat expressed his surprise at this turnaround in Spain’s position, which has always supported the Sahara’s right to self-determination and defended the UN resolutions that guarantee this right to the Sahrawis.

Spain has a historical responsibility towards the Sahrawi people, which is to complete the decolonization process, Belyaev insisted, reiterating his country’s support for the UN resolutions and a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front.
Regarding the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, the Russian diplomat indicated that these agreements arranged by Trump at the end of his term are not appreciated, even in the United States, as they are considered unfair and contrary to the interests of the peoples of the region and to peace.
