Revolut Morocco Authorization: Latest Update from Bank Al-Maghrib

Revolut has not filed for authorization in Morocco. Abdellatif Jouahri, governor of Bank Al-Maghrib, clarified this after confirming a meeting with fintech executives in early June.

The group did not come to request formal permission to operate in Morocco. Instead, it expressed interest in the Moroccan market, highlighting its development prospects and the role the kingdom could play as a gateway to Africa.

The clarification is important because Bank Al-Maghrib did not reject Revolut’s authorization. "But they didn’t ask for authorization," Abdellatif Jouahri insisted. "They didn’t come to me saying ’we want authorization.’"

The governor explains he simply told Revolut’s executives that the timing was not favorable. Bank Al-Maghrib is occupied with other priorities, notably the issue of Moroccan banks in Europe and international evaluations scheduled for year-end.

The discussion was therefore postponed, with no formal decision on a possible Revolut entry into Morocco. "They said ’we are interested in Morocco,’" Abdellatif Jouahri summarized, clarifying that he explained to them that the central bank was currently "busy with a lot of other things."

This clarification avoids any confusion. Revolut is indeed interested in Morocco, but there is neither an official authorization request nor a formal refusal from Bank Al-Maghrib. The matter is simply postponed for later.
