US Report Criticizes Morocco’s Human Trafficking Prevention Efforts

In its latest annual report on human trafficking, the U.S. State Department once again places Morocco at Tier 2, pointing to some shortcomings in the country’s efforts to combat this scourge.
Despite some efforts, the Moroccan government’s response remains, according to U.S. authorities, below the minimum requirements in terms of preventing and suppressing this crime.
The analysis points to undeniable progress, particularly in terms of investigations, prosecutions and convictions related to human trafficking. The 2022 report indeed reveals an increase in the number of cases examined, with 120 new cases leading to the arrest of 97 suspects, including cases of sex trafficking and labor trafficking. These figures testify to a net increase in the actions taken compared to the previous year.
The U.S. State Department also points to shortcomings in the care of victims. It accuses Morocco of not providing sufficient support to the associations working on their behalf. The services dedicated to the fight against trafficking remain insufficient, according to the report.
