A Repeat Offender Driver Shatters 8-Year-Old Amir’s Life: His Rehabilitation Costs 30,000 Euros

Amir’s life and that of his family changed forever on April 27, 2025, at around half past midnight. Their car was traveling on the Brussels ring road, near Anderlecht, when it was violently struck by a repeat offender driver under the influence of alcohol and drugs, despite already being on probation.

The little boy, then six years old, began convulsing before falling into a coma. He underwent several particularly serious brain surgeries. When he awoke, Amir no longer recognized his loved ones, could no longer speak, and was unable to move. He suffered, in particular, from right-sided hemiplegia and had lost nearly 70% of his muscle mass.

“In a few seconds, our little boy lost everything,” his mother Siham told La Dernière Heure. During her son’s coma, she had promised him never to leave him alone. Since the accident, she and her partner Joffrey have lived between hospitals, care centers, and dealings with insurance companies.

On June 4, 2025, Amir left the Queen Fabiola University Children’s Hospital to enter the William Lennox Neurological Center in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve. He remained hospitalized there for thirteen months, receiving care intended to help him gradually regain his mobility, speech, and greater independence.

The family has already seen what a mother’s long fight for her son who remained in a coma for eight years entails. For Amir, every improvement now depends on intensive and regular rehabilitation.

A New Skull Operation in October

When he left the center on July 3, 2026, his mother enrolled him in a six-week intensive program at a specialized facility in Antwerp. But this program, considered essential to preserving the progress he has made, is not covered by insurance. Its cost comes to nearly 30,000 euros.

Siham and Joffrey therefore set up a fundraiser. To obtain help, they had to make public images showing Amir during the most painful moments of his hospitalization. His mother says she agreed to this exposure solely to give her son every chance of recovering.

Amir’s medical journey is also far from over. As the graft of his cranial bone flap did not take, he will have to undergo another operation in October. Surgeons will have to fit him with an artificial flap, in an operation his parents already fear.

The family is also struggling greatly with the legal situation. While awaiting trial, the driver involved reportedly faced only a license suspension. “He has the chance to go home every evening,” Siham laments, while Amir’s loved ones have spent the past sixteen months living according to the rhythm of treatments and hospitalizations.

A charity event, the “Beat Dance Battle,” is being held on Friday, August 28, at the Motown Concert in Saint-Josse, Brussels. The proceeds are intended to help finance Amir’s neurological rehabilitation, and he will attend the event with his family.
