Red Line Warning: France and Spain Crack Down on Dangerous Overtaking with Heavy Fines

Notice to vacationers in France or Spain. It is strictly forbidden to overtake on roads with a continuous red center line. Offenders are liable to heavy fines.
This red line is not provided for in the Highway Code. In France, it is visible on certain motorways such as the A7 between Lyon and Marseille, or the A10. It is drawn as part of a pilot project led by Autoroutes du Sud de la France (ASF), a subsidiary of Vinci Autoroutes, in charge of managing part of the French motorway network.
The objective is to enhance road safety by drawing drivers’ attention so that they avoid overtaking on this section which had experienced a series of accidents, explains ASF. Motorists who attempt unauthorized overtaking will be fined 135 euros.
This type of horizontal signage was first seen in Spain, particularly on the A355 in Andalusia, following a series of accidents.
