Record-Breaking Moroccan Art Sale: Dinet Painting Fetches 1.2 Million Euros

The famous canvas by the French painter, Étienne Dinet, entitled "the son of a Saint M’rabeth", was awarded 13,119,000 dirhams, or 1.2 million euros, during the inaugural sale of the Moroccan subsidiary of Artcurial, on December 30 last at the Mamounia in Marrakech.
According to Map, this is the largest auction in Morocco and Africa, with the exception of South Africa. This painting by the artist Etienne Dinet (1861-1929), disputed by three bidders, has achieved the highest price ever obtained by the painter since 2008.
The auction took place in front of a Moroccan and international clientele, with nearly 15 nationalities among the buyers. It totaled 41,067,950 dirhams (3,819,319 euros), all fees included, the same source indicates.
The catalog offered 71 lots dedicated to Majorelle and his contemporaries, with the masterpiece of the Orientalist Étienne Dinet, the results of which reached 29,381,600 dirhams (2,732,489 €), according to an Artcurial press release. In addition, another set of 188 lots was devoted to "Made in Morocco", mainly with crafts and antique objects, amounting to 11,686,350 dirhams (1,086,831 €).
