New French Cabinet Includes Two Franco-Moroccan Ministers

Two Moroccans are among the members of Michel Barnier’s government, unveiled on Saturday evening. Who are they?

Rachida Dati retains her position in culture in the government of Michel Barnier, composed of 34 ministers and 5 state secretaries. She had been appointed Minister of Culture in January last year during the previous reshuffle, under Gabriel Attal, with the desire to promote a "culture for all", especially for the most disadvantaged and in rural areas, which would be a "lever of equal opportunities".

The other Franco-Moroccan who appears on the list of Barnier’s very first government is named Othman Nasrou. He inherits a new portfolio, that of Citizenship and the Fight against Discrimination, with the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau. He was born on July 13, 1987 in Casablanca. He attends the French high school, Lyautey in Casablanca, before continuing his studies in France. After the Sainte-Geneviève high school in Versailles, he joins HEC Paris in 2007. He graduated from there in 2012. The same year, he is naturalized French.

Very young, he embarks on politics in Trappes (Yvelines). He is a member of the political formation "Les Républicains" (LR). In 2014, he becomes a municipal elected official in Trappes in the Paris suburbs. In 2015, the new Secretary of State for Citizenship is elected regional councilor, then appointed vice-president of the Île-de-France region (Paris region), in charge of Tourism and International Affairs. Two years later, Othman Nasrou holds the position of president of the majority group in the region. In 2019, he is the vice-president of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, in charge of Economic Development.

A year later, Nasrou is elected vice-president of the Île-de-France region, in charge of European and International Affairs. In 2021, he is appointed vice-president of the Île-de-France region in charge of youth, the republican promise, vocational guidance and integration, higher education and research, and first deputy secretary general of the Republicans (LR).
