Rabat Cracks Down on Water Waste as Drought Intensifies, Fines Loom

Failure to comply with measures taken against water waste during these times of severe shortage can be costly. In Rabat, several citizens who have boycotted these measures will have to face the consequences.
For most of these people accused, it is about using hoses to wash shop windows and water the plants of cafes, while instructions had been given for water to be used rationally. According to Assabah, many cafes in the capital risk paying fines of up to 50,000 dirhams.
Good news, however, for the car washes in Rabat that are not on the list submitted to the justice system. The Arabic-language daily points out that they are authorized to use their own wells, even though several of them had denied having them last April.

Casablanca is also about to follow in Rabat’s footsteps in terms of sanctions against water waste. Mayor Nabila Rmili had already announced the colors at the beginning of August, noting that the watering of public and private green spaces, the washing of vehicles and the cleaning of streets with clean water are punishable by sanctions.
