Polisario Front Criticizes France’s Stance on Western Sahara Dispute

Oubbi Bouchraya, the Polisario’s representative in Europe and the European Union (EU), denounced French policy, particularly its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco on the Sahara to the detriment of the referendum wanted by the separatist movement.
"France has not only failed in its obligations under international law, but it has also clearly supported and encouraged Morocco to rebel against international legality," said Oubbi Bouchraya during a public session organized at the request of the Democratic and Republican Left Group (GDR) in the French National Assembly. Focused on the theme "assessment of France’s actions to ensure respect for international law, the case of Western Sahara," this session turned into a real indictment against France.
"Inside and outside the Security Council, France has supported Morocco in its rejection of the referendum (of self-determination), has defended Morocco’s unilateral proposal on autonomy and has acted to block any effort to allow Minurso to monitor the human rights situation," deplored Bouchraya Bachir, stressing that in the Sahara and in most of the immediate neighboring countries, there is a discontent with this "immutable position favoring the kingdom to the detriment of the interests of the other countries in the region".
The "Sahrawi" official also points out that this "cronyism" means that Morocco "broods over the plan capable of leading the entire region towards an irreparable situation". He holds France responsible for this situation, and believes that instability will only end if it balances its position. For Oubbi Bouchraya, the settlement of the Sahara conflict will only come through "the referendum solution".
